Some 179 fire incidents were recorded in the last 13 months that destroyed P 155 million damage to property with zero casualty , according to fire marshall Supt Mary Joy Candelario.
In the entire year of 2018, there were only 159 fire incidents with damage to property pegged at P 34.6 million. However, in the first month of 2019 (January) alone out of the 29 fire incidents there was one incident believed to be a case of arson.
A mining firm lost heavy equipment worth P 120 million after they were torched by suspected NPA rebels on New Year’s night in Ayungon Negros Oriental. Among those burned were 8 backhoes, 2 payloaders, 2 dump trucks, 2 generator sets and 1 rock crusher.
The rebels purportedly claimed that it was a form of punishment against the mining company for destructing the environment due its massive extraction of silica Barangay Jandalamanon, Ayungon.
Candelario said that the case has been forwarded to higher headquarters considering that the amount involved was significant.
Meanwhile, the City government of Dumaguete is looking into the possibility of building the city and provincial fire stations at a city lot in Barangay Talay through usufruct agreement where the ownership of the land remains with the LGU.
