Barangay elections postponement signed by President Duterte

Barangay Elections Postponed to May 2018

President Rodrigo Duterte signed Republic Act (RA) No. 10952 postponing this year’s Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections slated October 23 to the second Monday of May 2018.

With this development, the Commission on Elections has suspended all preparations in relation to the barangay and SK elections. This means the ban in carrying firearms, appointment, hiring and transfer of government workers, deployment of security forces, maintenance and construction of public works and others have been suspended.

As for all incumbent barangay officials they will remain in office until the next barangay election unless sooner removed or suspended for cause.

A continuing appropriation of about P6. 09- billion will be set aside exclusively for the conduct of the Barangay and SK registration and election in May 2018.

“Subsequent synchronized barangay and sangguniang kabataan elections shall be held on the second Monday of May 2020 and every three (3) years thereafter,” the RA stated.

Further, the assumption of office of the barangay and SK officials elected under RA No. 10952 will begin at noon on June 30 following their election.)

As for the SK fund, it will be used solely for youth development and empowerment programs as provided in RA No. 10742, or the “Sangguniang Kabataan Reform Act of 2015”.
