Congressman Roque said that the Senate has not yet acted on the move to postpone the election of new barangay officials to May 2018. Unless the Senate acts on this question, then the regular barangay election scheduled for next month will push through.
President Duterte has repeated in his many speeches his opposition to the conduct of barangay election to prevent narco-politicians from holding office or even using drug money to win a seat.
Roque doubts that the barangay election will in fact happen, given the problem at the COMELEC involving its Chairman.
But Roque said he believes the election next month should push through because a holdover for barangay officials would be arbitrary because then they will no longer have an elective mandate.
He said it seems that the best option now is to amend the law and make barangay officials appointive.
