City to submit designs for MRF, SLF to DENR

Sample landfill design

DUMAGUETE CITY – Experts tapped by the City Government of Dumaguete are preparing the designs for both the Sanitary Landfill and Materials Recovery Facility that will be established in the newly purchased lot in Barangay Candau-ay.

Once submitted, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will either approve or disapprove the designs and plans. The administration has vowed to respect the decision of DENR although it will be a setback in the city’s quest to establish an MRF and SLF to better manage the solid waste produced by the residents pegged at 80 tons daily.

The approval of the MRF and SLF will also hasten the closure and rehabilitation of the Candau-ay open dumpsite.

DENR is also studying the safe closure and rehabilitation of the open dumpsite, which has been ordered closed four times prior to the assumption of Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo.

Nevertheless, the city government and the Department of Interior and Local Government represented by City Local Government Operations Officer Aquilina Eltanal will enhance the advocacy and enforcement of the solid waste management even up to the point of compelling the barangays and households to segregate and manage their own trash under pain of penalties and possible jail time if warranted.
