The Dumaguete City Tourism Office reports total visitor arrival of 706,689 for the year 2018, versus 615,861 for the year 2017 or 14.75% increase. The tourist influx data is gathered from local hotels/resorts in Dumaguete City, which has reported an average occupancy rate of 76% last year.
City Tourism Officer Jackie Antonio stressed that this does not yet include accommodation establishments listed under AirBNB which has also reported a high occupancy rate for the year 2018.
Meanwhile, two tourist police outposts are currently being installed at tourist convergence spots along Rizal Avenue. The local government of Dumaguete approved the implementation of these structures last 2018, with a floor area of approximately five (5) square meters, to address public concerns on safety, vandalism and monitoring adherence to local ordinances.
The head of the local Tourist Police Unit assigned in Dumaguete City, Police Chief Inspector Varie A. Villanobos welcomes this development and thanked Mayor Remollo and the Sangguniang Panlungsod for their support.
Villanobos stressed that police visibility and presence in high-foot traffic areas like the Pantawan and the beach courts along the Rizal Boulevard are effective in their efforts to maintain peace and order in the community.
