DUMAGUETE CITY – The Provincial government is opposed to the introduction of coal-fired power plants and industries in the province to preserve the province’ natural beauty and serene environment with beautiful surroundings and a balanced ecology.

Executive Order No. 9 dated March 28, 2018 makes it a policy for the province to develop and utilize clean and renewable energy such as geothermal to support economic growth and shy away from activities that are destructive to the environment and harmful to Negrenses’ health and livelihood.

The Provincial EO No. 9 is non-negotiable. As a mechanical engineer, Governor Degamo who worked with NAPOCOR before is aware of how much volume of carbon dioxide is emitted into the air if coal is being used in power plants. He stressed massive emission of carbon dioxide into the air from coal-powered plants will further heat up the environment, the consequences of which are very destructive.

There is no coal-fired power plants in Negros Oriental and the province will not allow such a plant to be established anytime soon. “Do not attempt to ask for permits (for a coal plant) because this is non-negotiable,” said the Governor.

Future leaders and sanggunians are encouraged to make the same stance because this is not just for the present generation but for the generations to come so they can still breathe fresh air when they come to Negros Oriental.
