DUMAGUETE CITY – By July, two New Sanggunian Panlalawigan Youth will assume their posts as ex-officio members of the legislative bodies.
They represent the League of barangays of the LIGA and the Sangguniang Kabataan posts of the SK.
In the case of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, the President of the Liga ng mga Barangays and Sangguniang Kabataan Federation President of the 25 cities and municipalities composing the province of Negros Oriental will be elected and installed as members of the SP with full rights and privileges as a regular member. Thus, they can introduce or author proposed legislation, join the deliberations and vote.
Similarly, all the Punong Barangays and SK Chairmen of a given town or city will elect their own Presidents, who shall assume seats in the Sangguniang Panlungsod or Sangguniang Bayan with the same rights and privileges.
Dumaguete City DILG Officer Aquilina Eltanal confirms that elections for the SK Federation will be held on May 29 to be followed by the Liga ng mga Barangay polls.
DILG shall Chair the committee that will supervise the elections with the provincial, city and municipal election officers and Sanggunian Secretaries as members.
On May 22, SK officials from Dumaguete, Valencia, Sibulan and other neighboring LGUs will hold a mass oath taking.
With the two new members of the SPs by July, Eltanal does not discount the possibility that the current majority-minority alliances in the SPs will be altered in favor or against the incumbent mayors and Governor. But she hopes that despite their affiliation, all of them will work as one to promote the general welfare.
