Nigger

EVERYDAY HEROES

The dreaded “N” word. To my knowledge, no word in the English language triggers such emotional chaos as does this simple six letter word. Even words that sound like the dreaded “N” word are dangerous.

The word “niggardly” meaning “stingy” or “economical” and having nothing to do with race / color by definition or origin has cost several people their jobs and reputations. Anthony Williams, an economist for the mayor of Washington DC, was fired for using the term in a financial report. Even members of the academic community are not immune from ignorant over-reaction. Dennis Boaz, a teacher in Mendocino California was fired for using that perfectly good word just because it “sounded” bad. Ten teachers signed the complaint. You would think teachers would know the words origin and proper definition. One teacher was even afraid to use the word “niggeritis”. A perfectly good word dealing with fatigue from over eating. We have become a nation of cowards held hostage by the politically correct.

As a white man there is no way I can understand the pain and rage that the simple word “nigger” generates in the hearts and minds of people of color. This mystification is compounded by the fact it does not bother me when people try to insult me by calling me names like “Honky”, “White Trash”, “Red Neck” or “Cracker”. I simply attribute it to their ignorance and walk away. I have been denied jobs based on my color and was blatantly discriminated against socially. I do not let it bother me.

I , like the late Julian Bond, a man I admire very much, do not believe in using derogatory terms that insult and denigrate anyone, BUT I also do not support censorship in any form. While I will never use such terms as “Flip”, “Gook” “Kike”, “Chink” or “Nigger”, , BUT I support your right to use them. In fact I encourage you to use them. That way I can tell whom I do not want to call my friend.
