Peoples’ week usher 70th Charter & fiesta

Athletes from Saint Paul University Dumaguete cheer as their bets compete during the City Meet that ended Saturday. The winners will represent the Dumaguete City Division in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association slated in February 2019 here in Dumaguete also.

Dumaguete City’s 70th charter anniversary activities kicks off today, Sunday, November 11, 2018. It opened with a People’s Week celebration which will continue up to November 13 at the Quezon Park to be followed by a family farm congress, a trade fair, as well as sporting events to include the first Dumaguete triathlon on November 18, 2018 and a three-day National Beach Volleyball competition from Nov. 19 to November 21. The Miss Dumaguete talent night will be on Nov. 16 at the Quezon Park which is open to the public. Pageant night will be on Nov. 22. Other activities include barangay night on Nov. 23, civic military parade on Nov. 24, and the fiesta concelebrated mass on the 25th . This will be capped with the charter day dragon boat race on December 2, 2018 at the seawaters of the Rizal boulevard.

Prior to the opening salvo, a fondant decorating competition will be held at the Robinsons Mall on November 10, Saturday. This will be participated in by local cake artists according to city tourism officer Jacque Veloso Antonio.

This year’s 70th charter anniversary activities are initiated by the local government unit as well as organizations and groups who sponsored grand events like the Song of Solomon, a new musical, to debut in Dumagute on Nov. 15, 2018. This is sponsored by the Dumaguete Theater Company.

Other than the usual contests, one of the more interesting events is the conduct of the search for the best cook for the “humba” dish. Dubbed as “Hus Humba is D’Best?”it will be held on November 17, 2018 at the Quezon Park.

Now on its second year, the “humba” cooking contest is for non-professional cooks to be judged by known chefs, restaurant owners, and caterers in the community. Participants include small eateries or individuals who have the passion in cooking. Veloso, however said, the number of participants is limited to 15 only and will be increased as it progresses.

After the competition, cooked humba will be served to the public. This will be served with hanging rice.

Another event is the first Dumaguete Skate Boarding competition organized by local skate boarders in the city with on site registration of P50 pesos only on the competition day, November 25. This event is made famous after a Cebuana skateboarder won the gold medal in the ASEAN games recently. Efforts are underway to invite the gold medalist Margie Didal during the skate boarding competition in Dumaguete, says Nazile Ruales, one of the organizers.
