Religion by the numbers

The last Spanish priest as signed in Amlan during the Spanish times, Fr. Hilario Eraso, had left the province of Negros Oriental on 17th of November 1898.

Before his departure, Fr. Hilario Eraso had recorded in the year 1894 having solemnized 424 baptisms, 84 marriages and 95 funerals; and in the year 1897, 272 baptisms, 44 marriages and 115 funerals.

After his departure, the spiritual needs of the parishioners of the town were attended to by the parish priest of Tanjay, Fr. Baldomero Villareal.

According to parish records, the Filipino priest, Fr. Villareal administered in November and December 1903, 42 baptisms; in 1904, 278; and in January to May 1905, 76.

Fr. Villareal also officiated in the year 1899, 32 weddings; in 1900, 13; in 1901, 77; in 1902, 100; in 1903, 62; in 1904, 66; and in 1905, 7 weddings.

Because of the need for a resident pastor in Amlan and the numerous petitions of its inhabitants, nearly a year after in May 1905, Bishop Rooker of Jaro sent the Augustinian Recollect missionary, Fr. Pablo Vicente, to serve in Amlan.

To make history come alive, a photo of Fr. Pablo Vicente, OAR, was presented at the 170th founding anniversary of the parish of Amlan.

His first baptism was on 3 June 1905. For that year, Fr. Pablo Vicente administered 194 baptisms in all; in 1906, 270; in 1907, 407; in 1908, 371; in 1909, 364; in 1910, 326; and in 1911, 360

Born in 1853, Fr. Pablo Vicente in Amlan town died in early 1912 when he baptized 59 children.

From his arrival in Amlan in May 1905, he officiated in that year 8 weddings; in 1906, 40; in 1907, 74; in 1908, 53; in 1909, 47; in 1910, 77; in 1911, 59.

Before Fr. Pablo Vicente could reach the age of sixty, he died in 1912 having solemnized 12 marriages.
