Two new shootings in Guihulngan, Dumaguete

Another week, another spate of shootings. Two more persons were shot to death in two separate incidents in Guihulngan and Dumaguete.

Vincent Villarin, 34, of Barangay Poblacion 1 (Tinago) was shot by two unidentified suspects late at night on August 19 near the Barangay Police outpost. He died on the spot. The victim’s wife claims her husband was on his way to buy cigarettes when he was attacked.

Two days later, a 45- year-old woman was ambushed by two male suspects as the victim was driving her motorcycle in Poblacion, Guihulngan City. The victim, Haide Flores, was shot multiple times and was declared dead on arrival at the Guihulngan District Hospital.

Despite the increasing alarm raised by the residents particularly in Guihulngan City, authorities have yet to make significant breakthrough to assuage the anxiety of the people. What makes it even more alarming is that attacks seem to be well-coordinated, retaliatory in nature, and are allegedly insurgency-related.

The LGU of Dumaguete, meanwhile, has invested an additional P2 million worth of equipment to purchase handheld radio units, drones, motorbikes, bulletproof vests, body cameras, and soon CCTVs in a serious attempt to enhance the anti-crime fighting capability of the local police.
