Women with more children are less suicidal

A significant psycho-social study from our neighboring Taipei claims that the more children a woman has, the less likely she is to commit suicide. This was done by Dr. Yang, a public expert at Kaohsiung Medical University. The Taiwanese researcher said, summarizing a study of more than 2,000 mothers who took their own lives.

The study published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal, serves as evidence against the notion that a large number of children could lead to more suicides because of the extra stress on mothers.

“Women tend to find solace and support from their children on marital problems, especially in patriarchal Asian societies,” said Dr. Yang Chunyuh, the author of the study.

Women with three children are 60 percent less likely to commit suicide than those with one child, according to the study, the first of its kind in Asia.

The study analyzed 2,252 Taiwanese women who had a first live birth between 1978 and 1987 and committed suicide by 2007, the end of the study period.

The study supports classical French sociologist Emile Durkheim’s theory that parenthood confers a protective effect against suicide, said Dr. Yang.

“Women feel that they are needed and they have responsibilities to bring up their children and they are less likely to take their lives during setbacks or stressful situations,” he said.

Suicide is among the top 10 causes of death in Taiwan, where birth rates have dwindled to one of the world’s lowest.

The island’s birth rate stood at 8.29 birth per 1,000 people years ago, when government data showed, that compared with a global average of more than 20 births per 1,000 people, according to the United Nations.

In the Philippines, we do not have a reliable statistic regarding the number of suicides committed by the Taiwanese mothers as reported by their doctor and researcher, Dr. Yang. But what we know for sure, are the reports in the newspapers regarding the presence of several illegal medical as well as non-medical abortionists called “matronas” or “manghihilot” who regularly perform abortions usually paid by the young girl’s boyfriend. These innocent women are mostly students who are maintaining a secret or clandestine love affair with their irresponsible boyfriends and regularly indulging a sexual relationship which ultimately would result in unwanted pregnancy. To avoid being known by their parents both parties would decide and submit to have the young fetus be aborted by these unlawful and sociopathic abortionists around.

When this victimized student comes home for vacation, she would appear “clean” as if nothing happened to her. However, some victims of abortion suffer severe complications and die.
